Dropping Negative Bias

As a working tarot reader I get really annoyed when someone claiming to be an empath, psychic or a medium talks about other people in a negative way. Do not proclaim to be an empath and then actively wish for someone else’s demise. If you are as connected to spirit as you say you are … Why are you projecting bigotry, hatred, cruelty or taking advantage of people’s curiosity or grief?

This industry has enough mistrust from generations of scam artists. I truly believe in what I do. Someone who is unscrupulous puts my work in jeopardy. That type of behavior makes my practice and business so much more difficult as someone who is genuine in their belief and actions. Every industry has bad apples and this one is no different.

For some mediumship and tarot is just a job, but for myself this is a deeply integrated part of my life and who I am. I believe there are rules and ethics that apply to doing this type of work. However there are no hard and fast rules that are widely accepted by the community. It’s hard to have universal rules when so many different types of people come to provide answers to the public. People from an array of backgrounds from christian to pagan give messages to the public. Each person creates their own belief system and set of standards. I’ve taken classes from people who do not set standards for their students. I believe a lack of uniformity is helpful but also hurts our community. Discernment is a lost art. The more discerning you are the better off you will be when receiving messages from readers, practitioners and the universe. Unfortunately, as someone who thinks everyone lives their life with similar morals and intentions I am often let down.

I know that I teach my students and clients that ethics and integrity matters. I also know we are human and fall into human traps. All we can do is our best. I am challenging other readers, mediums and even the paranormal community to do  better. To try to be open, honest, not play into stereotypes, to not take advantage of someone when they are grieving, to say no even though someone’s money is good but they are not ready to hear the messages you have to share. This world is filled with misogyny, hate, bigotry, racism, and many other awful things. Why would you choose to be another dark spot? Why would you actively work to create more fear?

Instead we should be choosing to be the light, to provide hope, to help others see their own world from a different perspective. My job is to be truthful to my clients and students. My job is also to provide hope. My job is to provide honesty in such a way that the situation is highlighted but not bitter. If you bring forth fear, hate or pessimism how can you help someone to move past the spot in which they are stuck in? Or perhaps that’s your goal? You’ll always have clients if you keep them perpetually stuck in the same spot. I truly hope that there is no one who’s thought process comes from that place when providing messages.

I understand as humans we give more weight to negative thoughts than positive information. Negative thought bias is what makes the news so addictive. The world in which we are living is praying upon the confirmation bias of most, and I think we need to break that pattern. Let’s stop reinforcing readers who provide negativity, fear and hate. I think it’s important to lift up people in this business who provide light and stand in integrity. Share some of your favorite readers and practitioners who uplift you in the comments.
